While gathering images for the Santa Rosa Air Museum at their air show in August 2010 I had the opportunity to gather in flight images of aircraft above the Santa Rosa countryside. I had never done this before and it was quite an experience and very interesting. Once airborne we began flying in large circles over the countryside to gather the best view with the sun behind our aircraft. For this image the three aircraft were farther out from my aircraft than I wanted so I asked my pilot if he would ask the pilots to close formation. My pilot then radioed the three other pilots and they closed formation and I gathered this image. I just found this image of the three planes recently and thought I would share it with you.

Behind The Lens

Location

I gathered this image at The Santa Rosa Air Show on August 19, 2010.

Time

The time was around noon, The plan was to gather the images with the sun behind our aircraft and reflecting off the three aircraft I was photographing. After several circles in the sky above the Santa Rosa countryside I gathered around forty or so images. I then asked my pilot if he could ask the three aircraft pilots if they could close formation and move a bit closer to our aircraft. The pilots slowly closed formation and I gathered this image and several other images. I felt that I had collected enough images for this assignment and mentioned that to pilot. My pilot Radioed the three aircraft pilots. The three pilots rolled the aircraft wings as a thank you and headed out over the Santa Rosa Country side. That evening I processed images and the next day I passed out imaged to all the pilots!

Lighting

For this assignment I was excited and the lighting was absoluety perfect!!! This assignment is one I will never forget!!!!!!

Equipment

I gather all my images with my Olympus E-5 Camera! Also I have Four Olympus Zuko Digital Lenses: An Olympus Zuiko Digital 50-200, An Olympus Zuiko Digital 50mm 1:2 macro, An Olympus Zuiko Digital 12-60mm an a OlympusOM-System Zuiko Reflex500mm 1:8. I have a battery pack connected below my E-5 and extra batteries in my camera back pack along with cleaning supplies. No Tripod was needed as I was in a cockpit of an aircraft with no floor and no room for a tripod!

Inspiration

Gathering images for the Santa Rosa Air Museum and given the Opportunity to gather in flight images was almost more than enough inspiration for this old Irishman!

Editing

After selecting the chosen images, I post process with latest version of Photoshop CC. Some require more processing that others.

In my camera bag

My camera bag sometimes seems to be way to heavy and it has just one strap. One day I will purchase a better system. The camera bag always contains my Olympus E-5 with battery pack attached below the camera. The lens most often on the camera body is my Olympus Digital Zuiko 12-60 mm 1:28-4. In reserve are my Zuiko Digital 50-200mm 1:2.8-3.5 and my Olympus Digital 50mm 1:2 Macro. A 500mm lens will join the other lenses very soon. In addition to my lenses I always have extra batteries, lens cleaning supplies and rain protection. Also if needed is a manual for my E-5 and a remote shutter control as I lost one on location. Shop towels help separate the lenses as my bag has only two areas for gear. Also I have an extra eye piece as I lost one once on location and its always nice to have a small notebook on hand for writing down any relevant information. A bottle of water and a small snack is also handy.

Feedback

This is an interesting question. My thoughts are in no particular order. Always have your camera with you. Keep your camera and lenses in good condition and readily available. If you happen to see something that interests you take the time to stop and gather the image. In fact gather several images as the light is always always changing. Also perhaps change the settings on your camera. Maybe try for different perceptive for gathering the image you want. Perhaps try a different lens. If you happen to be in one place for several days become aware of the light conditions and weather. Most of all Trust your Instinct and have Fun!!!
