American bitterns are a very shy, solitary type of heron that prefer dense marshes to hide and feed in. If alarmed they will point their bills upward, and together with their striped feather pattern will mimic the vertical pattern of the reeds and cattails to stay hidden. This one was captured just by chance at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge near Los Banos, California. A rare find, not only because they like to stay hidden, but because of their dwindling numbers.

It was such a huge surprise seeing him as we were driving along the edge of the marsh...there he was. It was a "Mark, stop the car!!" moment for sure!! He stayed just long enough for both of us to snap a few photos...and thank goodness he was close because that was the day I messed up my camera settings! Not many people get to see these guys. It was really cool....

Awesome, this is a difficult bird to capture, they are rare here in the South of England and very secretive, someone spotting one will always draw a lot of attention, wonderful capture Nina and creative Editing:-)
