I feel like the shadows should be deepened to make the details stand out more, but the shot is very well compsosed and I feel like I'm really there!

I'm looking at some of the winners of the competitions you've entered this photo into and I really have no idea how you haven't been chosen over them. Absolute madness! Brilliant picture, one of the best I've seen in my short time on here!

Stunning. You could say that this came from a dream, of some sort

A bit overwhelming in the sense of it being created without man's touch. It also makes me feel like the whole creation could take me out in an instant, if it were to fall. I like that feeling.

Just noticed it is Breckenridge, CO! Been there but missed anything like this (skied my only double black there. Not pretty but survived). Was this out of bounds at the ski slopes? Cross country?

Location
Seasonal "Ice Castle" built in Breckenridge, CO. The people that make these by hand are exceptional people and deserve the credit. Please visit www.icecastles.com for more info on these spectacular creations.Time
Mid afternoon 4pm-ish. Sun sets early in Winter so the sun was getting low with great lighting.Lighting
All natural lighting. Exposing for this shot was tough to not blow out the sky but late enough in the day that it evened out quite well in post processing. Used TTL metering to quickly meter out the sky and interior, then averaged the two manually.Equipment
Shot with Canon 7D, 10-22mm ultra-wide lens, handheld, no other filters.Inspiration
It's easy to see what inspired this shot. These "Ice Castles" are mind blowingly beautiful and I must have burned a couple CF cards on this place.Editing
Yes. 5 pano single exposures shot in RAW, initial development in Lightroom, panoramic stiching and fine detailed masking on the sky in Photoshop to bring the levels down. Re-imported into LR for final clarity/sharpening and cropping. In my camera bag
Camera (7D currently), 10-22mm, 18-135mm, 50mm 1.8, Circular polarizers, .6 ND filter, square graduated ND filter and adapter rings,Feedback
Shoot manual, shoot RAW. Learn to use your in-camera metering to manually average the exposure. This shot is a combination of planning the composition in my head, timing the light to get as even exposure as possible against contrasted sky and low light interior, careful hand held shooting (use a tripod if your low light control is still developing or shutter speed is too low), ultra-fine masking technique in post, and honestly - having a spectacular place that is really hard to take a bad photo in. You won't get shots of amazing places if you don't venture out to amazing places. Check out www.icecastles.com for next years locations.
