Behind The Lens

Location
This picture was taken at Dorian Bay on the Antarctica Peninsula. We took a zodiac excursion from the ship to the shore of the bay where over 1000 Gentoo Penguins were among the colony.
Time
This picture was taken in the afternoon on a warm summer day in December. Antarctica's summer season is the same as North America's winter season. The temperature that day reached a balmy 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lighting
It was a cloudy grey/blue day, which filtered the sun on the penguin, for a soft subtle lighting effect.
Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon EOS Mark II camera and a Canon 70 - 200 f/2.8 lens @ 195mm, 1/8000 and f/6.7.
Inspiration
Antarctica is a special and unique place to photograph incredible landscapes and abundant wildlife. Gentoo Penguins are everywhere, hanging out at the rookeries or strolling to and from the sea. This lone penguin was in the middle of nowhere as I followed him with my camera as he walked towards me. I was able to capture several great shots of him and this was my absolute favourite shot.
Editing
Post-processing was performed in Photoshop and Lightroom using the most popular editing tools (contrast, curves, sharpening, saturation, noise reduction and a gradient filter).
In my camera bag
When this photo was shot, I was using canon cameras and lenses. However, I have recently switched to the Sony Mirrorless system - Sony A7RIII with the 100-400 Lens and a few other Sony lenses to cover wide angle to zoom and a macro lens to boot. I also carry a tripod for landscapes.
Feedback
Take every opportunity to photograph all subjects, from landscapes to people to wildlife. Have patience and wait for the perfect moment. If you are fortunate to travel (once it is safe again), go to exotic places and tell your story through the photographs that you take. Don't forget, when all is still, take a moment to truly appreciate the splendour of the environment that you are in.
