This picture was taken at Dorian Bay on the Antarctica Peninsula . We took a zodiac excursion from the ship to the shore of the bay where over 1000 Gentoo penguins were hanging out.Time
This picture was taken in the afternoon on a warm summer day in December. Antarctica’s summer season is the same as North America’s winter season. The temperature that day reached a balmy 35 degrees Fahrenheit.Lighting
It was a cloudy grey day, which filtered the sun on the penguin, for a soft and subtle lighting effect.Equipment

Antarctica is a special and unique place to photograph incredible landscapes and abundant wildlife. Gentoo penguins are everywhere, hanging out at the rookeries or strolling to and from the sea. This lone penguin was in the middle of nowhere. I followed him with my lens as he walked towards me and I was able to capture several great shots of him. This one was my absolute favorite shot.Editing
Post-processing was performed in Lightroom using the most popular editing tools to make minor adjustments (contrast, brightness, curves, sharpening, saturation and noise reduction).In my camera bag
While travelling, I carry a Canon 5d Mark II and a backup Canon 40D camera with a Canon zoom 70-200 f/2.8 lens and a 16-35mm f/2.8 lens for wider angles. I also travel with a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, polarizing filter, and shutter release cable.Feedback
Take every opportunity to photograph all subjects from landscapes to people to wildlife. Have patience and wait for that perfect moment. If you are fortunate to travel, go to exotic places and tell your story through the photographs that you take. Don’t forget, when all is still, take a moment to truly appreciate the splendor of the environment that you are in.
