Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on holiday in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Time

I took this shot just after sunset once the city lights had turned on.

Lighting

I waited with my friend until the city lights turned on. After that, I asked him to walk slowly over the bridge and make circular shapes with his smartphone flashlight. The other light streak is from a boat.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens and some cheap tripod.

Inspiration

Amsterdam has some amazing architecture, and I new that it was going to look amazing at blue hour. I cycled with my friend to find this place in the morning, and then returned later to capture the shot. The water and lighting was awesome, so I could not miss this one.

Editing

I use Photoshop and Lightroom to edit my photos. I generally like to keep lots of detail and boost the natural colours of the scene.

In my camera bag

I usually have a Nikon D7100, Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 35mm, tripod, remote shutter control and Hoya Nd500.

Feedback

It's good to sometimes look online for interesting buildings etc. Once you find the place, it's good to do a bit of planning if possible. Another thing that I think is that city shots usually look better at blue hour when you get all of the amazing city lights and dark blue sky.
