I took this photo of myself sitting on a frozen lake on a cold, winter night here in Joensuu, Finland. There was a small island nearby, so I decided to use it in the shot.Time
It was around 8 or 9pm when I took this photo. The sun sets early at this time of year, so the darkness had already begun many hours before.Lighting
I used my camping lantern to light myself, and a powerful torch to light the island and frost in the air.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens. Also a tripod.Inspiration
I originally wanted to capture this island with the stars above in the night sky. When I got there, my mind changed as I saw how the frost formed these awesome shapes in the air, dancing around in the light. It was then when I decided to forget about the stars and try something different for a change. I put myself in the frame to add a human element, and that was about all I needed to create the shot.Editing
Post-processing included putting two images together in order to get myself in the shot, as I also needed to light the island and air with my torch. That's the magic of a tripod! You get to keep the scene the same while adding different elements to the moment. I also used Lightroom and Photoshop to add contrast, sharpness and to also adjust the white balance to achieve an even colder look.In my camera bag
I usually have a lot of torches with me! Especially on nights like the one in this image. The cold weather drains batteries faster, so I always keep a spare light as well as an extra camera battery. Otherwise, it's the usual camera gear. A Nikon D7100, tripod, shutter release cable and a few different lenses usually do the job.Feedback
Keep warm :) It gets really cold out there in winter, so make sure that you have suitable clothing so that you can stay for longer if necessary. I also recommend using a wide-angle lens so that you can get as much as possible into the frame. A tripod would be almost essential if you were to do anything like this in low light, especially if you need to take the photo yourself. A few bright lights will help to fill the foreground, and a powerful torch can help to light the background when doing these long exposures.
