Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my local lake here in Joensuu, Finland. The lake is called ''Pyhäselkä''. ''Pyhä'', meaning ''holy'', and ''selkä'', translating to ''back'', or ''spine''.

Time

The photo was taken at sunset (around 9pm), in July. Here in Finland, the time of the sunset changes drastically throughout the year. In summer, sunset can be at 11pm, and in winter at around 3pm.

Lighting

The composition of the rocks took priority in this photo, but I was also lucky enough to get some lovely colour and light from the sunset to the right of the frame.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 10-20mm, and a ND filter to smooth the water.

Inspiration

When I was on location, I had plenty of time to adjust and plan my shot. In the end, the awesome texture of the rocks and the colour from the sunset were my biggest inspirations. Finnish nature is amazing and I do my best to honour it.

Editing

I used a fair amount of post-processing on this photo. I brought up the shadows quite a lot to showcase the awesome, rough texture on the rocks. I felt that this would compliment the softness of the water and sky. I also added a slight orange tint to the image as well to give it a warmer atmosphere. Other than that, just the usual sharpening etc.

In my camera bag

I normally carry with me my Nikon D7100, Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 35mm, Hoya ND500 Filter and a tripod. Always a tripod. I also use a remote shutter release if necessary.

Feedback

Unless the water is already incredibly still, use a ND filter to smooth it out (by taking a long exposure). Find a nice location with some interesting rocks and a large body of water. The lake in this photo is quite large, so you can't see the other side very well. This helps isolate the subjects and to draw emphasis to them. A decent sunset will bring lovely shades of colour to your sky and water, so the time of the day is very important. Be patient and take your time. Try many different angles, and then when you have found one that you're happy with, wait it out. The clouds and lighting can change a lot within a short period of time, so be ready to get it when it's good.
