Location
These steps are in the "Penitentiary Hollow" portion of Lake Mineral Wells State Park in Texas. The area was actually used as an outdoor jail during the depression as the area was easy to secure. The steps were built by the CCC Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression.Time
This would have been taken about mid day, but it was pretty overcast so lighting was pretty mutedLighting
Light was pretty muted, the day was overcast - it rained later in the day. I didn't help the heat and humidity much though!Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 70D and Tamron 16-300mm lensInspiration
Lake Mineral Wells is one of my favorite parks, I was just exploring and taking pics. I didn't want to carry too much with me - the steps aren't that easy to navigate with 30lbs of equipment hanging around your neck!Editing
This was processed slightly in Lightroom. The 70D was starting to have shutter issues, the exposures weren't very consistent and I wasn't real happy with the shots I took on this trip. The shutter died completely shortly after (it had a pretty high shutter count)In my camera bag
I normally carry a Canon 80D (I finally wore out the shutter in my trusty 70D) with a Sigma 18/300mm mounted, and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses, ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't plan shots beforehand - I'm a pretty impromptu/opportunistic photographer. I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 18-300mm Sigma though, the Sigma's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the openFeedback
Think about where you're going and the type of shots you want to take before you head out -it's a lot more fun if you're not carrying around way too much stuff!
