I walked into the woods near to my home in Hyderabad - India I noticed something strange moving in the center of this huge Banyan Tree, and Just for your info Banyan Tree is considered holy in several religious traditions of India, Well I began to move a little forward slowly to see what exactly it was then I realized it was an Owl, Yes it was Spotted Owlet which was difficult to notice where it was camouflaged against the tree bark and shadows, it sat there and disappeared into the hole next to it, I began to get ready and took position of my camera and was waiting patiently when it will come pop out And well one should be very patient especially in Wildlife Photography,.. then after a while the Owl came out and created an artistic impression and was wondering why I was still around and what I was upto, Let me tell you the Spotted Owls use a perch to sit and wait to dive down onto prey, in that moment I began Angling my camera up towards the dawn light to get a good composition with the rule of thirds in mind but there was some disturbance of other light from the side of the tree trunk as distraction with half the tree trunk exposed in picture... then I centered the Spotted Owlet to the center of the picture but I knew that I was breaking the rule of thirds but I decided that was a better option than the distraction... and went ahead with my shot. and then finally when I saw the outcome of the picture I felt a bit satisfied and give it a thumps up.

Wonderful shot, beautifully composed and really showing camouflage well! Nice that you didn't crop it too tightly; the greater tree area increases the possibility of the owlet getting "lost" in the field and increases the excitement at seeing him! Great work!

That's a great home your friend has made in the Banyan tree. That tree must be huge! Great photo, straight on, reveals the level of camouflage that critter has with his environment. Thanks!

Great shot. The composition really shows how the owl was using the tree as a camouflage.

Rules are meant to be broken and your fine image is evidence enough. Thanks for sharing the story of this image. It is important to do this.

Its all been said, but I do concur, the temptation to crop was well resisted, it took me two passes to spot the Owl, I also thought it was Mono. Great work Robbie.

Great comp and framing, but it’s those flashing eyes that color my reception!
