Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Southern end of the Salton Sea in California. I love spending time in the desert and spent a few days at Anza Borrego. I learned that the burrowing owl breed close by in the area around the Salton Sea. I had to go there, of course.

Time

It was in the afternoon on a hot day in June

Lighting

Shutter speed1/1000 Aperture f/8 Iso 200. The light was pretty bright.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5, a tripod, a Nikon 600mm lens

Inspiration

The owl. What a funny bird. After I had learned that there are owls in the area I drove there hoping that I would see one. When I saw the first owl, my camera was in the trunk, the tripod as well. I opened the window and talked to the owl: please, stay there, I need to get my equipment. You are so beautiful etc. The owl was kind enough to stay. I opened the trunk of the car , set up the tripod. The owl kept posing. But at some point it started to get angry and making all kinds of strange noises. It was so funny. I saw many of the them, but this one was by far the funniest.

Editing

I used lightroom to turn it into a black and white photo.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5. I have several lenses. I do not like zoom lenses so much. If I go for a walk in the summer I take a macro lens, in case an interesting bug comes my way. For bird photography and/or on a safari I take the 600mm along. I love that lens, but it is on the heavy site and requires a tripod. For street photography I like a 200mm lens. what I take along depends on what I plan to do.

Feedback

I still believe that loving something, somebody or being fascinated by something is a pre requisite for taking a good photo. Being patient helps a lot when taking photos in nature. Being ready is another prerequisite for street photography, nature photography as well. Something interesting can happen any moment.
