Behind The Lens

Location

At the resort FDR Pebbles in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica. We loved this resort because it is run and owned by Jamaicans so all revenue stays on the island, the staff were simply incredible, children under 12 stayed for free, and every family with small children were assigned a vacation nanny so the parents could have a break too! We visited three times and ten years later I'm still Facebook friends with this fire breather, "Brainstar" and some staff.

Time

This was taken in the evening, dimmed lights for Brainstar's show.

Lighting

To be honest I can't remember if I used the camera's flash or not.

Equipment

My Canon camera, kit lens. Nothing special.

Inspiration

I asked Brainstar's permission to shoot his act and gave him use of the photos if he wanted. He was a regular performer at the resort and I was so impressed with his abilities I wanted to photograph his work. I mean he's balancing upside down on one hand while blowing double fireballs! What could be a more inspiring shot!

Editing

I don't like to over-process my images at all so I generally limit any post-processing to cropping/straightening and light adjustments on exposure and color to reflect the accuracy of the image.

In my camera bag

Canon T2i, kit lens, 70-300mm lens, macro lens, a couple of rarely used filters, collapsible hood, rain cover, back up battery and SD card, and multiple microfiber lens cleaning cloths.

Feedback

Take the shot. Take the shot a hundred times. Use the rapid repeating shot feature on your camera if you have it. Does it suck going through 500 shots to only fine one good one, but that one good one will be fantastic!
