Behind The Lens

Location

At the edge of the "See Ya" ski trail at the Steamboat Ski Resort, Steamboat Springs, CO.

Time

We were nearing the end of a ski day, working our way back to the base of the mountain, probably just after 3:00 in the afternoon.

Lighting

This was shot using the natural lighting, which is a bit flat because of the cloud cover.

Equipment

I used my Pentax *ist DS camera with a Pentax 55-200mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

As we were nearing the end of our ski day, I noticed that the local winter sports club was practicing their racing skill on the race course set up near the base of the mountain, so I found a spot along the boundary fence around the course to watch some of the skiers make their runs. I thought it would be interesting to see if I couldn't capture a few shots of the skiers during their workout. I took a bunch of shots of a number of skiers as they raced down the course, but this is the one I liked the best.

Editing

This photo is straight from the camera, with no post-processing.

In my camera bag

When I'm skiing, I carry my camera with a longer zoom lens, mounted in a quick-release chest harness, under my coat. This keeps the camera secure while I'm skiing, while providing quick access when I'm ready to shoot.

Feedback

As with a lot of action photography, there's a certain amount of luck involved in capturing powerful images of the action. I find that I have more luck if I take a lot of shots in a continuous shooting mode, rather than trying to capture a specific moment perfectly. It does mean that I have to sort through more shots, but it is usually worth it because there are often some great shots in the mix.
