Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in August 2005 in Queenstown, New Zealand, on the shore of Lake Wakatipu. The water here is the Frankton Arm of the lake, with the Queentown Golf Club on the opposite shore, in front of the mountains.
Time
I had been out strolling along the lake shore for a couple of hours when I captured this image, so as best as I recall, it was probably slightly before midday.
Lighting
As can be seen in the photo, it was a beautiful clear day, with bright sunlight. This shot is taken facing south, so the low, winter sun would have been behind me, and somewhat to my left (east), judging from the shadows on the mountains.
Equipment
This was my first trip after purchasing my Pentax *ist DS camera. This was my first venture away from 35mm film, and this shot is pretty much the reason I've never gone back.
Inspiration
My wife had gone off with some others from our group for an adventure on the Shotover Jet boat, but I wanted to soaking in the beauty of the landscape here, so I stayed in town and walked around with my camera. When I first saw the sailboat, I was lined up with buildings behind it, but as I walked, the perspective changed, and soon I had a lovely vista with trees and the mountains behind it. I framed several shots at different focal lengths, but this was easily the best of the bunch.
Editing
This image was cropped to produce a 16" x 20" print, but otherwise was not post-processed.
In my camera bag
On this trip, I was only carrying the Pentax camera and two lenses, a 18-55 mm zoom and a 50-200 mm zoom. Given the luggage limitations, I did not bring a tripod with me, so everything on this trip was shot handheld.
Feedback
When you find an interesting subject that you want to shoot, try to walk around or past it, to view/shoot it from different angles. Sometimes a change in the perspective can take a mediocre composition and turn it into something truly special.
