Location
This image was captured at McCrory Gardens and Arboretum on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. My wife and I were travelling from Kansas City to Minnesota shortly after I experienced a heart attack and had quadruple bypass surgery. This necessitated stopping often to stretch and walk around. Driving north on Interstate 29 we saw the sign for this garden and thought it would be a nice place to get out and walk. What a pleasant surprise it was, including this "Writer's Cabin" on the grounds.Time
This image was taken early morning of a hot July day.Lighting
The time of day gave a nice low angle to the sunlight, along with some lovely shadows. There had been a severe thunderstorm the night before, and is often the case, it left beautifully clear air in the morning. (We also helped the grounds crew a bit by picking up fallen branches along the trail and around the cabin.)Equipment
I was using a small Canon Powershot A630 "point and shoot". I still carry this as one of my second cameras when kayaking or backpacking due to its compactness and quality.Inspiration
My wife and I were both impressed with the "cuteness" and location of this beautiful structure and I took many images from several different angles. I chose this one to enter as I loved the contrasting light and shadow, as well as the angle on the building.Editing
NO, this was all natural light and taken before I had any post processing software. In my camera bag
Nikon D5100, Canon A630 and Canon SX710HS. I love them all for different reasons and uses. For the Nikon I have a Tamron 150-600 lens and a several filters, spare batteries and SD cards. I will sometimes (when birding) carry a tripod, but usually not.Feedback
Early morning, first light after a thunderstorm is one of my favorite times to shoot. We were just lucky to come across this cabin. I say lucky, but really it is a willingness to stop and explore new and unknown sites along the road that offer up the greatest opportunity for interesting images!
