Behind The Lens

Location
We took this photo of the Vestrahorn mountain at the Vatnajökull region of Iceland.
Time
This was taken during sunrise, after a very dark and stormy evening. We had lost all hope for great light, but the a slight wind picked up and moved the clouds just enough for light to come through.
Lighting
This photo was taken only with natural light.
Equipment
This photo was taken with a Nikon D750, a 20mm f/1.8 prime lens and a NiSi 6 stop filter, on a MeFoto tripod.
Inspiration
Seeing many shots of this location on social media was the main source of inspiration for us.
Editing
This is a panorama of 5 photos, so we stitched the photo together in Lightroom, did some minor adjustments to highlights, contrast and exposure and put the photo through Nik colour software to add some more saturation and contrast.
In my camera bag
We use a Nikon D750, and a Nikon D610 as our camera bodies. We also always have several Nikon lenses, including the 20mm f/1.8 lens, the 70-200mm f/4, the 50mm f/1.4, and the 24-120mm f/4-5.6. We also have extra SD cards (you never know when you’ll need more space), extra batteries, and our NiSi and LEE ND holders and filters. Our most used combination is the Nikon D750 with the 20mm lens, as it has given us our most consistently sharp and accurate results. We also use the Manfrotto 055 Aluminium 3 Section Tripod as well as the MeFoto GlobeTrotter Titanium Travel tripod. We use Arca Swiss ball-heads with both tripods and use L-brackets for all of our cameras (They really help with doing panos)
Feedback
Never give up on a sunrise! We endured strong winds and heavy rain the night before and just minutes before this sunrise. Its a great practice to try and scout the location at least once before taking the final shot so you have a good idea about composition and light. Also visit Iceland, its a photographers paradise and the light is almost always unbelievable! :)
