Behind The Lens

Location

North of Lethbridge Alberta.

Time

It was taken in late afternoon. Generally, in Canada, large storms mature in late afternoon and remain photogenic into the evening.

Lighting

Storms over Canola always work, it is one of my favorite scenes to shoot.

Equipment

Canon 6D, 16-35mm F2.8 USM II on a Milano carbon fiber tripod.

Inspiration

Every summer I spend as much time as I can chasing storms. In May, Tornado Alley in the USA. June and July on the Canadian Prairies. We followed this storm for a few hours, stopping anytime we found something interesting in the foreground, like this canola field.

Editing

I shoot in raw, so in lightroom I boosted the shadows, dropped the highlights, boosted the clarity and the saturation.

In my camera bag

I travel with Canon 6D and a 24-70 f/2.8 II as well as 16-35 f/2.8 II lens. I also carry a 7dmkII with 100-400 for any wildlife i might happen across.

Feedback

If you have never chased storms before, it is best to find someone who knows what they are doing to take you along. Many storm chasers will do this to share fuel expenses. Photographing storms can be risky if you are not familiar with severe thunderstorms.
