Behind The Lens

Location
30km East of Kindersley Saskatchewan Canada
Time
8:40 pm
Lighting
As I saw this massive shelf cloud approaching through the smoke 30 km East of Kindersley Saskatchewan, I drove off of the highway to try to find something interesting for the foreground. This blooming canola field had to do. It is very dark under a large storm like this, you only really realize it when you set your shutter speed.
Equipment
I shot this with a Canon T3i at F/7.1, 1/3 sec, ISO-200, 21mm on a Manfrotto Tripod.
Inspiration
Sometimes you just get lucky… I work in Northern Saskatchewan and flew to work on a Wednesday. Other storm chasers knew I was very disappointed to miss the set up for storms on Thursday. It seemed to be a common occurrence that big storms would fire up as soon as I flew to work and could no longer chase or photograph them. The smoke from massive fires in the North was very thick, the nurses flew me out from work on Thursday afternoon because I had a pre-existing respiratory issue. I landed in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and quickly checked the radar. I originally thought I would miss this storm, but when I next checked the radar while getting fuel on the way home, I could see that it had formed a large line and was headed towards me. At this point I could not have missed it if I wanted to. I keep my first DSLR - a Canon T3I - in a food cooler in my truck during the summer for times just like this. I was very glad I had it with me this day. As I saw this massive shelf cloud approaching through the smoke 30 km East of Kindersley Saskatchewan, I drove off of the highway to try to find something interesting for the foreground. This blooming canola field had to do. I stayed snapping pictures and admiring this massive storm longer than I should have. When the strong winds hit I had difficulty opening the door of my truck. I thought I locked myself out! Wind speeds were measured at 136 km/hr, and did a lot of damage to the farms in the area. One farm yard lost every building except the house. The house lost every window except for 1.
Editing
Processed in Adobe Camera Raw. Saturation, Shadows and Clarity adjustments.
In my camera bag
For shots like this I normally use my Canon 6D and a 24-70 f/2.8 II or 16-35 f/2.8 II. But I keep my first DSLR - a Canon T3I - in a food cooler in my truck during the summer for times just like this. I was very glad I had it with me this day.
Feedback
Storms can be very dangerous to photograph. If you have never done so, i'd suggest going with an experienced storm chaser. They will often let you come along if you help pay for your share of fuel. You can read many books and watch many videos, but they do not fully prepare you for being close to a large storm.
