Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on holidays in Edmonton visiting family in July 2013. We were on our way back from sightseeing an area near Hinton, Alberta.

Time

I remember it was getting late in the day and this was my first trip to this part of Alberta. I had seen so much that day, animals and of course beautiful scenery, but this was just so magical. I had never seen anything like this in Australia.

Lighting

The light is only natural, no real editing, just a little enhancement. I remember (have to go back into the memory banks) not worrying too much about lighting back then as I was just getting into photography and didn't really understand how important lighting is to a great photo. I just got lucky that day.

Equipment

I had my first digital camera, which was an Olympus and was 5 years old. I didn't even own a tripod or any other equipment just my little hand held Olympus. I just jumped out of the car on the side of the highway took one photo and thought that will do for my travel book when I get home. I didn't even check to see what I had until we were back on the road. Needless to say I no longer have that camera as it died on the way back home in Fiji. To have it fixed was not cost effective.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo and really any landscape photo for me is beauty. I remember thinking that the scene in front has so many layers in different shades and the few sun's rays shone beautifully through the clouds, even though they were not very prominent.

Editing

The simple answer is very, very little. I do not use Photoshop etc, but I do use Windows 10 editing tools. On this photo I just clicked on the "Enhancement" tool and that was it until I uploaded it to View Bug where I did sharpen it slightly.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D5100 camera, Nikon 18-55mm lens, Nikon 55-200mm, Tamron 70-300 Tele-macro 1:2 lens. I also carry spare battery, spare SD cards, lens pen for cleaning and remote shutter. I will take my tripod on holidays and use it at home. But just for quick days out I will just do hand held.

Feedback

I would say to take lots of photos on different settings. On this particular photo I just used auto, as my old camera had limited settings. Think about composition (although at that time I knew nothing about composition). I didn't understand about lighting back when I took this photo, but look at how the light affects the clouds and wait around if you can. I am lucky enough to have the sun set and rise at my home, so I can just take sunrises from my back patio, just have to get up early. Sunsets I just have to cross the road and I would stand there for up to half an hour to get the reds that I want, but I keep an eye out on the light until it's how I want it. It is just patience and practice to get it right. If you aren't as lucky as me to have the sun set or rise at home, be there as long as possible before and after the sun has set. Sunrise is a shorter time to capture a great photo.
