Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard on a late summer day.

Time

I had been photographing flowers and butterflies in the flowerbed when this Common Buckeye landed on a black-eyed susan. I couldn't resist the shot.

Lighting

It was afternoon , natural light. The sun actually was starting to move beyond the house so it wasn't so bright.

Equipment

I used my Cooplix P610 which actually was the first DSLR camera I had purchased. I was sitting on my deck, handheld with natural light.

Inspiration

I had been experimenting with different settings on my camera, shooting the butterflies in the flower bed. I saw this Common Buckeye land on the Black-eyed Susan's a few times but when he landed right in front of me I had to take a few shots before he moved. This one impressed me because of the detail on it's wings and the brown contrasting with the yellow petals.

Editing

I cropped the photo some and sharpened it with a simple edit program. I was just a beginner photographer and didn't have an expensive edit program. I tried to keep it as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

I now have a Nikon D7100 along with the Coolpix P610. I have a good assortment of lens from a macro to a 150-600mm telephoto zoom. I do have a few filters but am still experimenting with them to see if I can get the effect I want. I also have a tripod which I use on the big lens.

Feedback

In my case nature photography has taught me patience. I enjoy sitting in the backyard where the majority of my shots are taken . I watch the birds and insects, trying to learn their feeding and flying habits. I then try to position myself to take full advantage of that in my shots. Learn about lighting and composition, which is a work in progress for me. Find a subject or style that you are comfortable with and practice, practice and more practice . A DSLR camera advantage is instant review of your shot and learn from the slight mistakes.
