Location
I actually captured this picture of a Coopers Hawk just after it dove through my backyard. It was after some birds at our feeders ( they escaped) and as he turned out over the back pasture I was able to click off a few shots.Time
I got this shot late in the afternoon.Lighting
This was taken in natural light, late afternoon and sun was behind me.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 with a 70-300mm lens, handheld.Inspiration
This Coopers Hawk is a frequent hunter in our backyard and the back pastures. I get many shots of him and I'm always impressed with the powerful chest and searching , piercing eyes. They are majestic, powerful hunters and I am fortunate to see and capture them often.Editing
I cropped the original photo and increased the sharpness of the hawk to highlight the details. In my camera bag
The Nikon D7100 and 70-300mm lens is a staple in my bag. I also have a 150-600mm for long range nature shots, a macro 40mm f/2.8 lens, a 10-20mm for wide angle and a couple other kit lenses. I do have an assortment of filters but rarely use them. I also keep a Coolpix P610 for my moon shots.Feedback
Patience, Patience, Patience. If you are shooting birds, particularly birds in flight, study their habits, their flight patterns and their little nuances. Their actions are usually pretty predictable which helps you know where to focus.
