Location
We were on vacation exploring Michigans Upper Peninsula and lighthouses. This is the stair well of the Whitefish Point Lighthouse which I went up to the top.Time
It was about 3 p.m., a sunny day in July.Lighting
Natural lighting shown in from the outside doorway. The walls were white so no additional lights were needed.Equipment
I used a hand held cannon, no flash.Inspiration
I wanted to take pictures of lighthouses, inside as well as outside. While touring the lighthouse I walked in the doorway for the stairs up to the light and was struck with the image of the lacy spiral stairs with metal against the white walls. This was a great opportunity to get an abstract photo so I looked at the stairs from different angles and the natural black and white made it perfect. I have another photo of the same spiral stairs straight on and its not as eye catching.Editing
None needed.In my camera bag
Since I have a point a shoot camera with built in flash and zoom, I don't have a need to carry much equipment. Most of my photography is vacation related so I have polarized lens and a tripod, cables, charger and extra battery and SD card.Feedback
Always keep your eyes open for the unexpected and look at things from different angles. Even the ordinary becomes unique and family vacations hold opportunities to get that special shot. Set out with certain goals in mind for the day, use the rules of photography and have fun.
