Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my kitchen window.

Time

It was evening sunset, the sun was so large and I wanted to get a shot of the sun going down. I knew it was a matter of minutes to go outside and get set up before the sun slipped below the tree line so I grabbed my camera and took it from my kitchen window.

Lighting

I took several pictures with different exposures nothing else was used to enhance the lighting.

Equipment

I used my cannon with a zoom lens just hand held steadying myself with the refrigerator. I love my automatic settings with built ins especially for these types of spur of the moment pictures.

Inspiration

I love taking pictures of sunsets, the moon and landscapes so walking past the window and seeing that bright red ball of sun going down I had to take yet another photo. I took several pictures from the window through the glass layers and screen, centering and off setting the sun. I didn't want a naked red ball and my tree was budding so I used the hanging leaflets to cover part of the sun as a bit of interest. The window screen diffused the picture with perfection and the lighting gave it such a magical enchanting effect.

Editing

No post processing done, the auto settings helped a great deal and using the rule of thirds was all i needed.

In my camera bag

I have an automatic point and shoot cannon with manual mode and built in features such as flash and zoom lens. I don't need to carry much else except a table top tripod, larger tripod, some filters, extra battery and SD cards. My filters consist of polarized lens, small square of window screen and a chap stick for special effects along with cleaning solution. I use my camera mostly for travel and family events. Since I work full time I don't have the time for photo shoots like I wish to do, perhaps when I retire.

Feedback

Keep your camera handy, you never know when a great picture presents itself. Phone cameras take good pictures but a camera with higher pixels does a better job. Take pictures when you see them, don't worry too much about setting things up for a prefect picture, practice is everything, we learn from our experience. I’ve taken pictures from a moving vehicle (someone else is driving) just to capture a unique shot and sometimes I surprise myself with a nicely composed photo but mostly they are stepping stones to creating something wonderful.
