I took this photo on Rathbun Lake in Iowa. Beautiful place and it happened to be when the lake level was low so all the drift wood, rocks and sand were present and begging to be photographed. The sky was amazing that morning and I took two shots, one emphasizing the sky and the other on the driftwood. I'm glad I did. Later that week we got several inches of rain and all the beauty was once again under water.Time
I snapped this photo just a little after sunrise.Lighting
The lighting that morning was amazing and the clouds were great reflectors.Equipment
I used my Sony DSC-H50. No flash, no tripod. I wasn't well prepared. I hopped out of bed, grabbed the camera and headed for the lake.Inspiration
This is my favorite spot to shoot the sunrise and sunset. And like I mentioned before, it's not often that the water is low enough to see all the treasures below the water surface.Editing
I think the only processing I did was straighten the horizon slightly (pet peeve, crooked horizon) and I adjusted the color slightly to more accurately represent the rocks. Very minimal processing. In my camera bag
I normally carry several lenses (18-55mm, 70-300mm and a 50 mm), extra batteries, lens cleaner, mini tripod, my Polaroid Snap, lots of filters and a little notebook for lessons learned and things to try.Feedback
The best sunrises are before anything else is awake. I love making a cup of tea and sitting on the lakeshore with my camera. I always check the weather report the night before for the sunrise time and try to be out at least a half hour before to catch the full morning. And best of all relax and enjoy!
