Finally! After years of trying I finally got my lightning and rainbow picture. What an awesome evening. I headed out late afternoon, shot a little on the SE side, than drove across town catching up with a couple friends. We shot for a little while, than got dumped on by a microburst while driving up the freeway. I-10 slowed to a near crawl, with half the traffic pulling over and stopping completely. Can't blame them as visibility dropped to 20 feet. At the next stop Bryan and Chris headed NW back towards home and I headed SE towards this rainbow. I was just trying to find a foreground without telephone poles or other junk in the way. Found it just in time as this was the last bolt to strike before the storm dissipated into nothing.

Oh hell yeah! Way to go, you must've got such a high when you saw this pop up on your lcd. That cactus balances it so well too. Awesome.

One of the most amazing shots I've ever seen. Great work! It's not just being in the right place at the right time. You clearly understand your craft.

Lightning at night is simple enough, but when there is still daylight are the principles the same? I set my camera on bulb and "wait". Do you have your camera take multiple exposures until you get lucky? Great capture BTW.

No such thing here as 'lucky'...your skill and tenacity payed off, and from your story, I'd say that it was high time! Give yourself a pat on the back! Congratulations!!!

Wow, great shot is an understatement. I've photographed rainbows and lighting, but never in the same shot. Congratulations..

Nicely done. Few people appreciate the work that goes into this type of photography. Timing and luck play a very small role. Understanding the light and the lightning isn't something that can be underestimated.

Lived in Tucson for a number of years and was never able to capture this lightning/rainbow combo. Very cool photo I've seen this entered in other Viewbug contests where (IMHO) it fit more neatly than in this "Wilderness" category. Given your description of driving down Freeway and trying to avoid telephone poles in the shot......I suspect houses weren't far away either. All that said....beautiful.

I just would like to say, the juxtaposition not only between the rainbow and the lightning, but the rainbow and the desert is mind blowing. This is by far one of the most amazing pics I have ever saw!

I come alive during a lightning storm. As they say, winning is just icing on the cake. Magical shot. Keep it up.

This is spectacular. Rain doesn't t happen often in the desert, and this captures perhaps the end of a rain event at the speed of a lightning strike. Great pphoto.
