Location
I took this photo in Red Rock Canyon in Southern California. This was an area that I drove over two hours to shoot. It is a vast area full of spectacular structured sandstone mountains made from sandstone that were subjected to ash from volcanic eruptions and deposited in huge floodplains. Red Rock Canyon State Park is located along State Highway 14 in Kern County, about 80 miles (129 km) east of Bakersfield and 25 miles (40 km) north of Mojave.Time
I drove 2 1/2 hours to this location and started out early morning hoping to get morning lighting. I arrived at the park in the morning but after much searching and shooting for the perfect spot I finally found formation right before noon... Not an ideal time for photographing, especially in black and white. But I was taken by this scene and had to make it right.Lighting
Yes actually. Due to the time of day I had a challenge in lighting however, it ended up working in my favor. The textures and shading on the mountains allowed for the details and textures to come out without silhouetting any aspect of the subject. The clouds in the sky add depth and nice shading on the mountain.Equipment
I used Sony A-6000 with the 18-200 zoom lens. Mounted on American Recorder brand lightweight aluminum tripod. No filters.Inspiration
I had seen these mountains and shot them several times. I wanted something that inspired the imagination and so specifically wanted to capture these majestic structures in black and white.Editing
Yes, aside from the usual tweaks in esposure, etc. I changed the photo to black and white in post processing. I also cropped out half of the sun.In my camera bag
I have since upgraded my equipment to Sony 7RII full frame, and I take along several lenses. 28MM 1.8, 85MM 1.5 GM, and Zoom 18-210 Sony lenses. Always a travel sized mini tripod, 4 camera batteries : ) and extra sd cards and lens cleaning kits.Feedback
My advice is to always check your technical settings and details, but not so much that you lose your artistic creativity by being so immersed in the technicalities. We are artists. Shoot lots of things, experiment.
