Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in by garden at home. We had been out shopping and saw this dress which we bought for our youngest granddaughter. Here favourite frozen treat is the stripy lolly pop in the photo, so we thought she'd like a matching dress!

Time

It was taken in the afternoon of a very warm day by UK standards, in the middle of summer

Lighting

The lighting is just natural daylight. The sun had just gone behind a cloud (standard for here!)

Equipment

I used my Nikon D700 with a 50mm f1.4 lens. The lens wasn't quite wide open, but only by a tiny amount. f1.6!

Inspiration

I just loved the simplicity of the shot. I didn't want to see her face, just the lolly and the dress, I only wanted the lolly in focus, which is why I used such wide aperture.

Editing

No post processing apart from adjusting the levels to 'clean' the shot up a little

In my camera bag

I usually carry just what I need. I don't pack my bag so much that taking it out is more 'work-out' than 'photo-shoot'. Sometimes that will be one body and a fixed prime lens. Sometimes I may have two bodies and lenses from 24-70 to 70-200 and a x2 converter. I will always carry my 50mm f1.4 if I've got these lenses. I rarely carry a flash gun as I much prefer natural light when out and about. Sometimes I will have a tripod, but it does depend on what I'm off to capture.

Feedback

Keep things simple by only including what is necessary for that shot to say what you want it to say. Focus on the important element and make sure any important but out of focus elements are still 'readable' by the viewer by adjusting your aperture to get the effect you are after. Shoot more than one frame at different settings if you can, just so you have a choice later.
