Behind The Lens

Location

At the wonderful open air wedding of my friend's son in their Herefordshire Orchard

Time

The shot was taken about an hour after sunset. The strings of lights were glowing on the apple trees and the happy couple were lighting candles in one of the marquees.

Lighting

The light is purely available light. The couple are lit by candle light only

Equipment

Nikon D800 50mm f1.4 5000 ISO 1/80th sec f2

Inspiration

I was capturing the whole day for them and I was still very much in the 'groove'!

Editing

Only a little tweak to the shadow and highlight detail and also the colour balance

In my camera bag

It really does depend what I'm capturing. I always try to take the minimum I need to complete the job I'm tasked with. Too much kit in the bag, especially stuff I really won't use, just slows the process down. I did still take a few things I didn't use to this shoot though. The largest of which was a ladder. It remained in the car though as I unexpectedly had a Cherry Picker to play with! Usually 2 x Camera bodies, 24-70, 70-200, 50, loads of charged batteries and a few filters. I will have a Tripod, monopod and a couple of flash guns should I need them, but I usually shoot events like this carrying what I need rather than having it in a bag as I can work a lot more spontaneously if I'm not looking for equipment.

Feedback

If you want to shoot image like this, you do need to understand how YOUR camera works. I knew my D800 overexposes this sort of shot, so I used exposure compensation to keep the feel 'dark'. What I look for when I'm shooting is the key light. In this case, candles.
