Behind The Lens

Location

I created this image at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Time

It was taken just after sunset so that the buildings would be lit up but the sky wouldn't be completely black and dark.

Lighting

To light the subjects, I used my off camera flash unit and slowed down the shutter speed to pick up all the lights from the buildings, cars, and traffic lights to make the scene behind them pop!

Equipment

For this image, I used my Nikon D7000, AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens, Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash, PocketWizard- MiniTT1 Radio Slave Transmitter, PocketWizard- FlexTT5 Radio Slave Transceiver, and light stand.

Inspiration

While at Antonelli Institute, it was a few weeks before graduation so our instructors were able to get permission for us to photograph whatever we wanted at Penn's Landing as something fun to do as a class before we left. Since I enjoy creating fashion style images, I asked two of my friends to meet me there and model for me. I introduced them and immediately there was a spark between them so I just gave them an initial pose (my instructors gave me suggestions on how to properly expose the image) and I simply captured the natural chemistry between the two.

Editing

As for post-processing, I bumped up the blues and purples to make it pop a bit more, and there was a railing on the other side of the stairs that was distracting to the image so I removed it in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag you'll find a Nikon D7000 with a battery grip attached, a Nikkor zoom 55-200mm f/4-5.6 lens and a kit lens 18-105mm (just in case I need it), but my Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens is my baby and that's the one I mostly use while shooting. I also take a Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash for emergencies or if I have limited space, but if I'm going on location and I can manage I love taking my hot pink Alienbees with a fully charged vagabond to really light up my subject!

Feedback

My exposure was ISO 400, F/2.8, at 1/4 of a second. I have a pretty steady hand but because the lens is so wide open with a slow shutter speed, for most people trying to capture something similar, I recommend using a tripod to make sure the subjects are sharp and in focus.
