Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Amboseli Park in Tanzania. We had just finished watching a beautiful herd of elephants crossing by and looked over and saw this amazing sunset.

Time

It was right before sunset. We had taken advantage of the Golden Hour and were so excited to capture one of these famous African sunsets. The park is filled with so many beautiful elephants and we were mesmerized watching them interact and playing. We almost missed the sunset but saw the glowing sun cascade amazing colors of red and orange and started snapping away.

Lighting

I really wanted to focus on the tree and the sun rather than the animals. I wanted to make sure the colors came through and you could see the silhouette of one of my favorite trees. I must have taken a hundred pictures of the sunset but this one was my favorite with the sun just above the tree and you could just make out some of the animals but they weren't the focus.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark III and 70-200mm lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the warmth of the sunset and the beautiful colors that were being reflected. It looked like a painting and I didn't want it so crisp and clear. The softness of the sun's rays really spoke to me and I wanted to focus on that.

Editing

I didn't do much post-processing at all. Some minor adjustments to the color to make the reds pop but that was it.

In my camera bag

I tend to travel as light as possible so have my Canon 5D Mark IV (I upgraded) with my 28-70mm lens and I'll take my 70-200mm for wildlife. I always have extra batteries with me and my rapid strap to keep the camera right at my side.

Feedback

Be patient and enjoy what you are seeing with your eyes so you can best capture it on film.
