Well done. Your timing was perfect. Anyone looking at this photo will feel like they are right in the middle of the action.

Location
This picture was snapped at a small rodeo arena in Camp Wood, Texas. I attended a ranch rodeo, a small event that features skills a cowboy or cowgirl would use in real life ranch work.Time
This was mid-afternoon with South Texas sun beating down.Lighting
Just full daylight, no artificial lighting needed.Equipment
At the time I was using a Nikon D3000. The lens I had at the time was likely a Nikkor 70-200mm zoom that came in the starter kit for my camera. No tripod, filters or other special equipment. I was just getting started with my photography hobby.Inspiration
I wanted to practice action photography and when I was invited to attend the rodeo, I guessed it would be a perfect situation to work on my skills.Editing
I cropped for content and composition. I adjusted some for contrast and brightness, but generally this photo is representative of what I saw and captured in the moment. In my camera bag
I have now upgraded to a Nikon D7100. I carry a variety of lenses, cleansing wipes for the lens, a plastic bag or two (in case of rain), bug repellent and antibacterial ointment, since I received an injury while out looking for nature subjects.Feedback
For this type of action, you likely won't be able to get super close to the action so a zoom lens will be helpful. I used the camera's built in action setting, but if you prefer manual you will need high speed to stop the action as I did here. Choose a spot where your view is not blocked by other spectators or fence rails and where the light is going to enhance what you can see as much as possible. Then hope that you catch that one special moment when it happens!
