First this works so well in mono, and the composition framing the little one is out standing, congratulations on producing a timeless photograph and not a snapshot.

Regards

Trev.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Kenya, Amboseli. It was at one of my first trips to Kenya.

Time

Around lunchtime.

Lighting

Aperture f/4.5?ISO 100?Shutter 1/800. It was a little overcast that day.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800, a 600 miles, no tripod but a beanbag on the roof of the car.

Inspiration

Well, being in Africa is always a high light. Amboseli is so beautiful with so many elephants, cranes, kingfishers etc. Just a happy place. Watching elephants is always fascinating. How they interact as a group, how the follow the senior animals, how they protect the young ones as depicted here.

Editing

I turned the picture into black and white in Lightroom

In my camera bag

That varies a lot. I do not like zoom lenses and therefore take usually one specific lens. 600 mm for cranes and wildlife in Africa, macro for walks in the summer. One can always find a dragon fly, when one keeps looking for them For street photography my monochrome Leica.

Feedback

Patience. When one spends time in nature, sits down and observes, something beautiful will happen most of the time. Animals will tolerate ones presence and start acting naturally. Dragon flies will sit on your hand, birds will come close looking for food etc etc.
