I am particularly proud of this shot. It should never have worked. It is a 3 shot bracketed image for HDR work, which ultimatley I composed it in, however at the time of shoot I only had the camera hand held, with the 300mm lens. I took the 3 shots but not having any equipment other than the screen on the cam was unable to tell if the shot had actually worked. I was convinced it had not. Only when I got back to the UK and viewed the images did I see this. To say I was startled is an understatement, but I love it all the same and from the excellent responses I have had it seems a lot you do as well. Many thanks to all that have commented, liked etc.

Thanks Kathleen, as in the comment I made it really should never have happened, I really did not think I had got anything of interest until I got back to the UK, put it on the PC and WOW! then it all came alive for me.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was captured on the seafront at Thessaloniki, Greece.

Time

It was around mid day, and being so early in the year (March) the sun was still at a low angle.

Lighting

Seeing the cloud breaking above Mt Olympus I could see light rays breaking through and so made the scene look amazing, with the detail of the mountain top covered in snow I knew it would made a good picture.

Equipment

I was using my old Canon 60D with a Tamron 70 - 300mm lens. The lens was at full stretch and the camera handheld as I had just left a cafe with a friend.

Inspiration

Seeing the clouds breaking was the main reason for taking the shot. I was not sure if I was going to get the image in good detail as the lens was not one of the best to use so I reverted to taking 3 bracketed shots, in the hope that at least one would prove to be usefull. Only when I got back to the UK and loaded the images onto the computer did I notice I had in fact got highly detailed images in all 3 shots, which, even today still surprises me.

Editing

I used Photomatix pro to compile the 3 images from the original RAW files, once that was done the rendered image was then finished in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Now I use a Canon 5d mk3 and still have my old 60D as a back or to use for video. I also have the following lenses: Canon 24-105mm f4, Canon 100-400m f4.5 zoom lens, Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, and a Samyang 14mm f2.8 Wide angle. I use a Canon ex580 flash when required and also use a Manfrotto 190 tripod, along with 3 sets of AA batteries for the flash, a few Nisi filters and holder.

Feedback

This was simply a case of taking a shot on the fly, seeing the scene and trying to get from it as much as possible. I am sure that given the same circumstances I would not be able to get this in a single shot let alone 3 that I did at the time, but, if you do not try, you do not get and for this I had to give it a try. The boat in the foreground also helped as it gives the image a good sense of scale and the seagull, well I had not even noticed that at the time I took the shots so was an added bonus. Luckily I was taking some street shots as well and so was geared up for it already although I still had my camera bag to hand had I felt I needed to make a lens change.
