By the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse area in Puerto Rico, This is a single shot photo I took there is no HDR or blending just the usual shadow an highlights, vibrance, etc, The sunset was just amazing and I was fortunate to be there and capture it! it had rained that day and I didn't know if the trip was worth it but I took my chances I got there a little late and just started to feel for the right composition until I found this spot up against the rock wall where this particular wave came up to my knees!

I took this shot at "Los Morrillos Lighthouse" in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, I started my landscape photography right there when I was about 16 yo, and this place is very special to meTime
I got a call from a friend early in the afternoon that day and he wanted to go to this location, I had taken a similar capture of this same spot a few days before and put it up on Facebook well my friend wanted to visit the natural bridge so he also could capture her beauty, It was raining that day and I didn't know if the trip was worth it but we gave it a go, I myself was excited about going again when we get there we noticed the waves were huge and I never saw it like that before it was intense and spectacular to see it alive and up close to the action! about a good forty minutes into our shoot at exactly 6:08 PM on 09/30/2012 I captured the picture of my lifetime and titled it "Portal To Heaven"Lighting
The Lighting was so good that day even with all the clouds in the way it was clear and crispy, I waited for the sun to get just above the horizon I knew that was the best light and with the clouds all around me and above me I could get some good light reflecting off the clouds above and behind me to light up the cliff in front of me, I gave it a slow shutter speed to be able to get more information from the shadows to later work on and used a high F/stop to make sure I didn't burn my highlightsEquipment
I used my Nikon D300 and a Nikon 18-200 VR lens, I also used a tripod and that was all I needed I used the timer on the D300 to make sure the shot is focused and not blurred, I don't like walking around with too much equipment and weight on my back I always go light, I don't even use a camera strap I walk without one on and have never ever dropped my camera.Inspiration
I took a few captures of this location a few days before, I wanted to capture a sunset here I knew I could capture something mystical my first try was nice everyone loved it and never saw anything like it, well I was thrilled about it and I felt it could only get better after this but you must push on! is how i was inspired to keep on creating and discovering, this is a never-ending story and I love it...Editing
My post-processing starts every morning when I look out the window, light is my priority, on this photo I started the post-processing on the camera with my setting I always have to know what I want and how to work it from the start, my ISO, F/stop, and speed, on this photo Portal to Heaven all I did was work on the shadows and highlights first, then I gave it some clarity then I proceeded to sharpen, cleaned the noise, work on the WB straightened the horizon cleaned all the sensor spots gave it some vibrance, contrast and cropped it, I then saved it in Tiff, PSD and jpeg, I only work in raw first on Adobe Lightroom then Photoshop, I do not do HDR, Blending or use mask I do try to stay as true to reality as possible with a hint of surrealism.In my camera bag
In my bag I carry for most of the time right now is my Nikon D300, D800 with an Nikkor 28-105mm, equivalent to 18mm on the D800, three filters a polarizer, ND, and UV filter a tripod and that's it besides water and snacksFeedback
My best advice for going out and trying to capture a shot like this is to go out as much as you can, carry your camera with you as much as you can, and push yourself to do it! every day you wake up look outside study the light of day notice the things people don't see and capture them, don't ever be satisfied because before you know it you're at the end of the line again, It took me over twelve years to capture this moment but I never gave in to giving up and still not giving up, keep aware of your surroundings try always to do something different than the usual and always be ready for the unexpected, I didn't find this spot it was always there but I did find her good side always look for the beauty in everything also try you're best to shoot in manual mode and raw format
