Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my very first astrophotography shoot. My wife and I decided to give it a try and drove around trying to find somewhere with minimal light pollution. We ended up at the Rupert Vance Moone Reserve in the Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria.

Time

I took about 30 photos starting about 6.45pm, with this shot being taken at 7:10pm.

Lighting

I tried quite a few settings, starting with low ISO and long exposures and gradually worked to taking this photo at ISO 3200, f3.5 and 10 sec exposure. The light on the branches was cause by a car going passed during the exposure, which I think actually helps.

Equipment

I took the photo with a Canon EOS 60D, using the kit lens 18-200mm at 18mm. I used an Optex tripod tilted about half way between vertical and horizontal.

Inspiration

I had seen many great night shots in the months before deciding to try it, mainly from fellow members on ViewBug.

Editing

The only post process was Auto Colour Correct in Photoshop. I very rarely do anything else other than possibly cropping.

In my camera bag

My normal tools are basically the Camera (Canon EOS 60D), 18-200mm Canon Lens, Canon EF12 II extension tube and a shutter release cable. I usually have a lens cleaning kit as well, for those occasions when dust gets on your lens.

Feedback

Patience is probably key as well as trying to find that special place where there is little or no light for near by towns / cities. Also choose a moonless night.
