Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my first trip to Singapore in 2017. My wife and I were there for the week. As a mostly self taught photographer, I have a passion for animals and nature, so most of the photos I take are taken on bushwalks in Australia or of wildlife.

Time

The photo was taken in the mid afternoon, but as it was taken indoors, it was largely an artificial environment.

Lighting

I used f/6.3 and a shutter speed of 1/160 sec and ISO 2500. The only lighting was the light in the enclosure. I don't ever use flashes or other lighting when photographing animals.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Canon EOS 80D with a Tamron 18-300mm lens. The photo was taken hand held.

Inspiration

I took the photo because the basilisk was motionless, as though it was waiting for me to take the photo. I only managed 2 shots before it moved into a position, that hid it's head from view. The colours in the photo and especially the yellow in the eye were really noticeable when I displayed it on the big screen when I got home.

Editing

Th only process was a minor tweak to lighten the whole image a little.

In my camera bag

I don't general take anything else with me other than the camera and the lens I have chosen for the day. Ocassionally, I will take both my new Canon EOS 6D, 16-35mm and 100-400mm lenses and nothing else.

Feedback

Patience and a lot of luck. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time for this one.
