Behind The Lens

Location

My backyard.

Time

4:20 pm

Lighting

It was cloudy and the lighting was great.

Equipment

I had just received my new Nikon 80-400mm lens that day. So I put it on my Nikon D7100 camera and went out to my deck just to try it out. I spotted the robin pulling out a worm from the ground so I hand-held the camera and lens and took a sequence of shots. I did not have time to get my tripod. I upped the IS0 to compensate for the lower light.

Inspiration

I love birds and was excited to actually be able to take shots of this robin pulling the worm out and consuming it. It was an unexpected opportunity and I was happy that I did not give up because I thought I needed to have my tripod or I would not have gotten this opportunity again. Fortunately, the photos came out sharp. The lens was great.

Editing

I cropped a little, sharpened and did some minor color adjustments in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My Nikon camera, Nikon lenses including a 12-24mm, an 18-300mm, a 70-200mm, an 80-400mm, a 50mm and a fisheye lens, extra cards and battery.

Feedback

I could have given up and not tried to shoot this robin because I was not used to the weight of the lens but I did not give up. The worse outcome I could have had was blurred pictures but it did not happen. So try!!!
