The timing on the "smoke" was great... good timing on the the fire button. I just text my wife and said, we are buying a fog machine! Congrats on the feature

Location
I took this photo in a theater at Pieve di Ledro in Northern Italy.Time
This was taken on 23/08/2010 at 21:41:59.Lighting
The image was shot in ambient light, which was lovely and atmospheric but very low. I bumped up my iso to 3200 in order to make use of the light as best as I could since I was not using a tripod.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D paired with my EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens at 50.0mm. No flash was used to shoot this image. The settings were 1/100 sec; f/6.3; ISO 3200 Aperture priority; Evaluative metering. I was not using a tripod hence the use of a relatively high iso. The original canon EOS 5D lacked the modern noise-reduction technology that is prevalent today so noise was a bit of an issue.Inspiration
I was with a group of photographers and we were invited to take some photos of a couple of dancers who were happy to perform for us.Editing
The original raw file had some noise for the aforementioned reasons, so that was the first thing I took care of. I played a little with colour and contrast and then decided to try a black and white version of the image which I really liked. I then concentrated on making the smoke as visible as it could be (The smoke is real as there was a smoke machine). I vignetted the image slightly, applied sharpening and finally tweaked levels to add contrast. In my camera bag
I carry the least possible equipment that I can to do the job, depending on what I am going to be shooting. I try to always include spare memory cards and batteries plus some cleaning stuff. I also take spare lens and camera back covers. Sometime I take my tripod and shutter trigger and occasionally I may take some filters with me.Feedback
Try to be as steady as possible due to the low light conditions. With today's modern cameras noise issues are not a real problem. Having said that do use a tripod if you are allowed to take one. Watch the dancers carefully to try to anticipate their moves. Here it was not too hard as the dancer was moving slowly. Embrace the conditions that you find in the theater even if the light may be difficult. Personally I just love the ambient light in theaters however weird it may be and I would not dream of using flash even if it was allowed.
