Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a small wooded area by a small man-made lake in Sicily.

Time

It was late early evening and I was there to take sunset photos of the lake. In the meantime, whilst waiting for the light to change, I went around to take a few other shots of random things.

Lighting

The light was lying quite low as it was almost sunset. But in this area of the woods the lights was diffused.

Equipment

I had my canon 5d mark 1 and lens. I have forgotten what lens I was shooting with at the time but it will be in the EXIF data as I shoot raw.

Inspiration

I have always loved trees. And I also love abstract and moody shots. So here I saw an opportunity to experiment a little according to my own tates.

Editing

The light was a little hazy so the effect is natural to the image. I converted this to black and white and played a little with gausian blur in overlay mode to give an ethereal effect. I also stretched the image a little in post editing.

In my camera bag

On that particular day I had my camera, a few lenses, a tripod, on camera flash (not in this shot), extra baterries and storage and a trigger. Nowadays I carry as little as possible.

Feedback

Go around and experiment. Go for random shots. Try to imagine the finished effect. This type of shot can also be captured using a hand-held camera on slow speed and moving the camera upwards (or downwards) whilst shooting. This gives the image an abstract feel especially if only parts of the subject are being included in the image. Sometimes, more is less.
