They surely did notice you, but not as a threat... Great opportunity, and excellently used. Besides, it proves that the camera absolutely must be at hand 24/7 - otherwise it is worthless, whatever type, model and/or price!
We have recently acquired a Canon SX50 HS, an excellent windbreaker-pocketable little machine, for just such impromptu situations. Have a Good light! :)
