There are an estimated 400 oystercatchers in the Galapagos. As this recently hatched chick explored the shore’s edge its parent watched from two or three yards away. She repeatedly called out to her chick. It was loud enough that we had heard her long before we popped out onto the shore. I suspect she was trying to tell her chick to stay close because only a few hundred yards away perched on top of a tall tree was a Galagagos hawk.
