Around 1900, teaching in small villages around the Zuiderzee in Holland was given at the house of the teacher himself, all ages where tought at the same time. The teacher often was the only one who could write properly in the village, so he also wrote all the official letters and correspondence of all the villagers...

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the "Zuiderzee" Museum in Enkhuizen, Holland.

Time

It was about 3 pm.

Lighting

The light was coming in very strong through the window into a dark chamber of a little fisherman's house. The old man was an actor who showed how writing was taught about 1900 in the small villages around the Zuiderzee in Holland.

Equipment

I used a Lumix DMC-TZ60, free out of hand. I didn't use my flash as I wanted to capture the bright light coming through the window.

Inspiration

Some years ago I visited this "outdoor museum" with my father, he was at the end of his life. He grew up in a fisherman's village at the beginning of the 20th century, exactly like this museum had rebuild and he told me a lot of stories while we were walking through history... he said that he was so happy that I had brought him "home" at the end of his life... So I wanted to go back there and try to capture this feeling in a photo. Light shining over dark past times...

Editing

I did very little post-processing, converting to Black & White and only a touch of extra contrast and I cropped the photo.

In my camera bag

I have a bag full of inspiration, a good eye for detail, love for photography and my Lumix.

Feedback

I chose a low point of view to focus the attention on the writing of the old fisherman. Because I wanted to show the contrast between the light coming through the window and the dark chamber I only showed a small part of the window to avoid too much overexposure. I asked the actor to change his pose in such a way that his hands and pen were nicely lit. The table cloth was put diagonal to emphasise the perspective.Take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one later. Once you open your laptop, the magic of today's world begins... I always crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop and edit the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
