Yes, I think he must have be rather drunk on nectar as he stood still for so long. My latest attempts to capture Tuis have been abysmal, I think they are hungry and on the alert as it's winter here at the moment.

This is awesome. I love the colors of the flowers and it serves as envelop of the bird. Congratulations on your award!

Location
Sitting in my office I heard some beautiful bird-song. Picking up my camera I knew I'd see our native Tui and I didn't want to miss an opportunity to capture this flighty bird.Time
It was late afternoon and the contrast with the light colored blossom was perfect against the dark colored Tui.Lighting
The lighting just fell exactly where I wanted it - no arrangement of nature needed.Equipment
Hand held Nikon d700, 70-200mm f2.8 lens. F3.2 with fast shutter speed of 1/800 as these birds rarely sit still long enough to capture the wonderful detail of their feathers.Inspiration
From the age of eight or so I have loved sitting still and watching our native bird-life and now as an adult I enjoy any excuse to get away from my office and watch these beautiful creatures.Editing
Post processing involved cropping, detail extraction as well as some brushwork to emphasize the feathers. In my camera bag
The equipment I primarily carry is as above as well as my 14 - 24mm Nikon lens.Feedback
When I get the chance to capture a subject like this it's important to remember to be quiet and patient. The flightiness and dark colour means a fast shutter speed will capture the moment and of course having light strike the bird helps. Not a lot you can manipulate but being prepared with camera, ready to shoot is a big key.
