This photo was taken a few minutes from my last home in Whitianga, Coromandel New Zealand, where I would often dutifully walk around with my camera gear hoping to seize moments I thought looked interesting.Time
It was taken around 9.30 am on a misty winter morning, whilst trudging along wet estuary sand with two camera bodies and a tripod. It was the end of an early morning excursion but I felt it was worth firing off a few more shots despite the later time...I think it paid off.Lighting
The light was beautifully filtered enabling the very low cloud to be back-lit without blowing out the highlightsEquipment
As usual I had my favorite camera - my Nikon D700 and the wide angle zoom 14 - 24mm 2.8 Nikon lens. With the aid of a tripod I was able to take the shot at f9 at 1/250th, using the manual setting.Inspiration
Inspiration for this shot came about because of the weather and the wonderful expanse of wet sand, and a rather sad looking row boat which looked like it would never see the sea again!Editing
Post processing involved the usual adjustments in lightroom, exposure,etc. I then converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro2.In my camera bag
At one time I would carry a lot of equipment and this shot was a result of having my main camera at hand as well as a tripod and fantastic lens (plus and extra body and lens I didn't use). These days I "travel" a lot lighter and often miss some shots I'd like but I am forced to think about how I shoot to get the results I want...so currently I am just as likely to have one lens and a body, or even just a good quality compact camera with me.Feedback
If you don't capture your shots at the key times of day you can still get some wonderful shots if you think about the direction of the light and what the ultimate image might look like, plus shoot in RAW so you have all the file information available to do any edits you require.
