Location
This was taken at a local hall in Thames NZ. It is immediately after the wedding ceremony and the elation culdn't be missed.Time
The photo was taken around 3.30 in the afternoon - it was a race to get outside before the bridal party so I could capture the moment they were waved along as the new couple.Lighting
With weddings and candid moments the lighting is beyond your control so it was spot metering for the skin tones and praying that there wouldn't be any blown highlights, or accidental underexposure.Equipment
As the light was beautifully filtered by cloud there was no need of flash to fill shadows.Inspiration
There was a lot of pre-planning to get this candid shot! It is important with weddings to get a good understanding of the "plan" and be in the best position to capture the moment. In the case of this photo there was a second shooter who got the shot from above whilst perched on a ladder (hence there is a similar shot taken in context with the building as well as the guests and ribbon wavers)Editing
Post processing involved the usual lightroom adjustments and then conversion to black and white in Silver Efex.In my camera bag
When doing weddings I usually carry my D700 and D300s (two D700s would be preferable). Lenses: Nikon 14-24 2.8 for wide angle shots; 70-200 2.8 for lovely portrait and zoom photos, with a 50mm 1.8 thrown in for emergencies or when I am so exhausted I can't lift the other gear anymore!Feedback
Depending on your own finances I think it's good to get a couple of shooters to get the best shot for weddings. Try and anticipate the scene as much as possible but be prepared to wing it at the time, it is rare for these moments to come together exactly as planned but being prepared is always better than flying completely blind.
