Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo whilst visiting a local couple my husband was doing some work for. They were building a new home next door to their temporary accommodation and things had begun to overflow onto the verandah making for a real character shot.

Time

This was taken during afternoon cuppa time as the conversation wound around the local community of Mohaka, which is not far from where we live.

Lighting

The lighting was fairly flat under the verandah but shooting at f8 meant I got an almost HD effect which added to nature of the shot.

Equipment

I had my easy to use set-up with my Nikon D700 and 50mm f/1.8 lens. This lens is light and easy to carry which was useful as there wasn't a lot of light: I was a whisker away from camera shake and any more weight and I would have had a blurry shot.

Inspiration

As were we conversing I saw this photo unfolding in my mind. I had to race to get my camera from our car. I then pretended to be taking photos of the dogs to prevent the main subject becoming self-conscious and awkward. After seeing the shot come to life in black and white I had to go back and ask permission to use the photo and thankfully he was happy to let me - once I gave him a print!

Editing

I initially developed the RAW file in Lightroom then converted the image to Black and White in Silver Efex Pro.

In my camera bag

When I am not intending to shoot I carry my Nikon D700 with 50mm lens (just in case). At other times I have my 70-200 mm f/2.8 and 14-24mm f/2.8 lenses and my Speedlight. I adore off-camera flash but in this instance I didn't use it as the subject wasn't going to sit still too long and the set-up may have alerted him to what was really going on!

Feedback

If you want to catch something candid like this photo I would suggest you shoot first and ask permission later! Actually it all depends on the situation, but I know for sure this guy would have been very uncomfortable in front of the camera had he known he was the main subject.
