This photo depicts a curved wooden trestle which is an open, braced wooden framework that supports the railroad above ground level. It consists of a series of identical (or nearly so) vertical supports holding up a succession of short spans. All wood portions of a trestle are designed to be in compression and never in tension.
Fierro is Spanish for iron and that was what the mine there produced. Peak production was between 1914 (the time of World War I) and the 1930's.

Very familiar this type of train track construction. There is one in downtown Columbus Georgia with steel supports. I'll post a photo.
