South of Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert. A 10 year old plant is only 1.5 inches tall. This saguaro was about 40 feet tall. The holes are often used by birds to nest. The holes also had been used by Native Americans as water containers long before canteens were available.

This is a wonderful cactus....really full of texture .I see it has Carnegiea in its name....(I wondered if the Scot Andrew Carnegie ,who was a great philanthropist ,had it named after him...?) Voted .k

You are so right! Carnegiea was named in honor of Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919). In 1903 the Desert Botanical Laboratory of The Carnegie Institution was established in Tuscon, Arizona. In 1908 the Saguaro catus was moved by plant taxonomists fron the genus Cereus to a newly established genus Carnegia.
