Location
This photo was taken at Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park in Alaska while guiding I was guiding photographers for The Farm Lodge.Time
The shot was taken mid day.Lighting
The high Alaska sun made the balance in exposure a bit of challenge but allowed for a nice fast shutter speed for capturing the salmon in the air.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D800 with a fixed 300mm lens and a 1.4 teleconverter. I was not able to use the tripod from this position but could brace well on the railing of the platform that we stood on.Inspiration
I love the interaction of the jumping salmon and the brown bears waiting to catch them. I have similar shots from over the years where the salmon is stretched out straight. I really wanted to get one where the salmon was arched in a swimming position to make it look more alive.Editing
This image required very little post-processing. I did a bit of cropping and color correction. In my camera bag
Because I am guiding in the Alaska wilderness I have to carry a small kit that will fit easily into the small planes and boats. I usually have my D800 with the 300mm lens for wildlife, a fixed 50mm for landscape. I also carry a light tripod, a remote shutter release, and a small assortment of filters and cleaning supplies.Feedback
The best way to get good wildlife shots is to spend ample time out in nature. Being familiar with your equipment so that you can make quick adjustments as the wildlife is moving is critical. If it is an area that you are not familiar with, you increase your chances of success (and safety) by hiring an experienced local guide.
