Grand Jury Winner

"Out of an incredible gallery of images, I chose this image as the winner because the story is so incredibly palpable--three subjects all in such a tremendous fight for life. This image evokes pure emotion and expression as both the lions and wildebeest fight for their very survival.  One can't help but remain engaged and insanely empathetic to the wildebeest, with its whites of the eyes showing, while the lions work to take it down.  In nature, "something must die so something can live."  If we "root" for one animal to live, we essentially "root" for another to die.  It's a truth we must accept as wildlife photographers.  This image captures every bit of that raw truth.  Technically, the image is also well photographed.  The tight crop creates a sense of discomfort with the viewer -- which fits the scene.  It is sharp, clean, and well executed.  An incredible moment that exemplifies the "Wild" part of wildlife.  For these reasons, this image stood out to me as the winner.  It has staying power and deserves this award." - Lisa Langell

Runner Up

"The story is strong in this image and I found myself coming back to this image numerous times because it is so compelling.  The two birds fighting over this fish is an incredible "wild" moment.  The technical excellence in how this image was photographed is equally incredible.  These birds move and dive quickly.  Catching this moment with the sharpness, exposure and clarity with which it was focused impressed me.  The whole moment is amazing and it will be an image I remember long after judging this contest.  Well done and congratulations! " - Lisa Langell

People's Choice

"What an incredible moment of interaction between these two birds!  They both appear to be fighting over a recent kill.  This behavior is exquisitely photographed and the mirrored stance is such a rare capture.  I love the expression, the story, the technical excellence in which it was photographed.  Brilliant!  This is an image that keeps drawing me back to look at it again and again.  Congratulations on a fantastic image." - Lisa Langell
